Introduction|Sentence Errors|Punctuation Errors|Academic Choices|Summary

Using punctuation marks correctly is an extremely important part of everyday writing; however, punctuation plays an even more vital role in academic writing because the language and the concepts being conveyed are often more complex and abstract than in other types of writing. The punctuation choices you make will determine how readable your work is as well as how formal it is. In the following sections, suggestions for using sophisticated punctuation choices such as colons and semi colons are provided. In addition, a section highlighting the difference between colons and semi-colons has also been included. Both colons and semi colons allow you to signal relationships between ideas and so learning to use them properly will add to your flexibility as an academic writer.
