Effective Writing
Legitimate paragraphs
Introduction|Macro Features|Micro Features|Summary

A paragraph is one of the basic units of organisation in writing. A paragraph is a related group of sentences, arranged in a logical manner which develop one main idea. This idea is generally expressed in one sentence known as the 'topic sentence'. The topic sentence usually occurs as the first sentence in the paragraph.

In addition to the topic sentence, a paragraph contains other sentences that support the point the topic sentence made. They might do this by elaborating or further explaining the point made in the topic sentence, providing supporting details or giving evidence.

A paragraph may also contain a concluding sentence, or sentences that provide a transition to the following paragraph.
