Repairing sentence fragments by repunctuating the sentence

Some sentence fragments can be successfully repaired by making different punctuation choices; for example,

There are two options which would alleviate the problem. Raising the dam wall or increasing the size of the spillway.

The sentence fragment 'Raising the dam wall or increasing the size of the spillway' can be repaired by attaching it to the previous sentence with a colon ( : ) where it will act as a dependent clause.

There are two options which would alleviate the problem: raising the dam wall or increasing the size of the spillway.
